In the poem Piano and Drums the narrator: Gabriel Okara, responds to the both types of symphony and instrument; Piano and drums differently. His response to the drums is that of excitement and callownessfulness, however, his response to the pianissimo is of unfamiliarity. Okara shows his both different attitudes through his choice of enunciation, rhythm, metaphors and symbolism. The choice of diction apply to chance upon the drums and piano creates a strong dialect on the contrast of African and western market-gardenings. The second stanza shows the narrators nostalgia and of how the drums bring back memories of his youth and past. Okara is on his mothers lap suckling. The familiarity of the drums brings him back to the past. The narrators feeling is roused the fine-leafed vegetable leaves and wild flowers that grow out in th! e land. This once more emphasizes the freedom and wildness; flowers growing and the trees thriving without the need for tender-hearted aid and their ability to spread out freely with no boundaries.
